Currently in construction, this multi-modal transit station is designed to serve up to 80,000 pilgrims/hr with metro, bus and taxi services. In addition to serving hundreds of thousands of pilgrims/day at peak times, the station is scaled and configured to serve local residents off-peak with an engaging public realm, amenities, parkland and a retail souq. With a LEED Gold target, the station is largely open to the public realm enabling a significant reduction in overall energy usage whilst being carefully configured to ensure acceptable passenger comfort and amenity in extreme temperatures of up to 45C. Structural innovations include the use of a long span balanced cantilevered roof structure built up with precast, post tensioned box girders - more commonly associated with bridge construction, achieving a 44m long span over the metro platforms.
